Spiraling Whitefly Control in Palm Beach County and Broward County
Introduced in March 2009, a whitefly was collected in Miami-Dade County from gumbo limbo trees. This was the first report of this insect on the U.S. continent.
This whitefly was originally called the Gumbo Limbo Spiraling Whitefly because it started in the Gumbo Limbo trees. It later attacked a broad list of hosts and was renamed the Rugose Spiraling Whitefly. The preferred hosts are Gumbo Limbo, Adonidia Palm, Coconut Palm, Black Olive, Live Oak, and the list seems to grow by the day.

Rugose Spiraling Whitefly (RSW) produces “honeydew,” a sugary substance that can stick to your house, car, or patio and make a real sticky mess. Leaves or fronds may have excessive and unattractive dark, sooty mold that grows on the honeydew. Leaf drop may occur in some species of trees and plants.
As of now, they’ve seen this spiraling Whitefly along the entire eastern portion of Palm Beach County. It seems to be moving west and is established in Greenacres, West Boca Raton, etc. It has been identified all over Broward and Miami Dade Counties for some time now.
