Drywood Termite Control in Broward County and Palm Beach County

Drywood termites are very common in Florida; many homeowners will experience a drywood termite problem in their home at some point. Unlike subterranean termites which require lots of moisture, Drywood termites spend almost their entire life cycle inside the sound, dry wood upon which they feed. At Hometown Pest Control, we understand the biology and habits of drywood habits &mdash and use it to create long-term termite control solutions. With two Associate Certified Entomologists and highly trained termite specialists on staff, we can provide effective termite control services, no matter the problem.

Only when swarming flights occur, do young adults leave their galleries to begin new colonies elsewhere. Winged adults or “swarmers,” shed wings, piles of pellets, and galleries inside wood are typical signs of a Drywood Termite infestation.

Drywood Termites in Florida

How do you know you have drywood termites? Though they’re often confused for carpenter ants and other types of termites, drywood termites are distinct in a few key ways.

What Do Drywood Termites Look Like?

  • They’re about ¼” –  ⅜” long
  • Typically beige to dark brown
  • Swarmers have sets of equal size, slightly lowered wings
  • Six legs
  • Small forward-facing antennae

How Dangerous Are Drywood Termites?

In terms of scale of destruction, drywood termites are not as bad as some other species. However, they can still cause devastating damage — and unlike other termite species that seek out damp or rotten wood, drywood termites will devour wood that’s dry and in otherwise good condition. They can also hide deep within structures and go undetected for years; sometimes by the time they’re noticed, the damage is severe.

How Do Drywood Termites Get Inside?

One of the roles within a termite colony is swarmer. When you see a termite with wings, it’s one of these swarmers, and its job is to go out and create a new colony. If you see a group of swarmers or their shed wings, it’s a sign they may establish a colony in your home. They typically get into houses through wood that’s exposed to the outside. Sometimes they get in through infested furniture that’s brought inside.
