3 Tips for Bed Bug Prevention

Bed bugBed bugs are one of the hardest pests to get rid of once they have infested your home. These critters feed on human blood at night while you are sleeping. For this reason, you may never actually see them, but you know they are there. Hometown Pest Control can eliminate these pests for you and keep them from returning. Get a jump on these pesky bugs and prevent them from entering your home.

Tip #1: Cut the Clutter

The more clutter in your home, the more places bed bugs have to hide and infest. If bed bugs do invade your home, the excess clutter will make it harder to get rid of the tiny pests. Decluttering your home can be a chore, but it can be one of the best methods to discourage bed bugs from invading. Even if you only have twenty minutes a day to work on decluttering, it will be worth it in the end. Throw out, donate, or recycle anything you can do without. However you do it, get it out of the house. Organize your belongings and store away items you don't need on a regular basis. For example, store seasonal clothing in vacuum-sealed storage bags to make them less accessible to bed bugs.

Tip #2: Vacuum, Vacuum, Vacuum

Despite their name, bed bugs aren't just found in or around your bed. They can hide in all areas of your home, including in your furniture and carpet. Vacuum regularly to keep these critters at bay. Make sure to get box springs, mattresses, and all areas of the floor. Use the crevice tool on your vacuum to get in tiny areas, such as between the wall and the floor. This is one of their favorite hiding spots! Once you have thoroughly vacuumed, remove the bag, place it in a sealed trash bag, and place it in an outdoor garbage can.

Tip #3: Cover Your Mattresses

Encase your mattress and box springs in protective covers. These covers are zipped encasements that cover the entire mattress. These casings are usually made of top-quality material that is durable and resistant to tearing. Additionally, there should be no folds around the zipper where bed bugs could hide out. While these protective mattress covers will not get rid of bed bugs, they will protect your mattress from becoming infested. These covers should only be applied once the above cleaning methods have been completed.

There are a variety of methods to get rid of bed bugs and prevent them from invading your home, but combining the various methods is usually the best bet for deterring these pests. Head off these bothersome bugs before they head in to your home and contact Hometown Pest Control today!
